Seven apply for new digital mobile licence.
Finland's Ministry of Transport and Communications reports that seven operators have applied for a licence to operate services re-using frequencies released by the closure of the country's 450MHz Nordic Mobile Telephone (NMT 450) network. Applications were submitted by Cubio Communications, Digita Oy, Elisa Corporation, Finnet Broadband Networks Ltd, LynxNet Oy, Nordisk Mobiltelefon and Saunalahti Group.
In general the licence is being issued to supplement Finland's supply of fixed broadband connections in accordance with the Government's broadband strategy (click here). The main objective is to enhance the availability of broadband in sparsely populated areas and areas with recreational housing, as well as in the Finnish archipelago. In addition, the new network will support data transfer services via PCs throughout the country.
