African 3G operator goes live with Glenayre video mail application Print E-mail
Wednesday, 06 July 2005

Glenayre Technologies has announced that mobile operator MTN has gone live with its ‘Versera Video Mail’ application as part of a 3G service rollout in South Africa . With the launch of video mail, MTN joins only a handful of worldwide mobile telecommunications operators to offer this next-generation messaging application.

A major step beyond picture-based messaging, 'Versera Video Mail' enables all video telephony calls to be answered and allows MTN to launch an attractive, high bandwidth service that capitalises on its 3G technology investment and satisfies demanding subscribers.

'Versera Video Mail' is an application enabled by Glenayre's 'Versera Intelligent Communications Environment (Versera ICE)'. MTN South Africa has implemented 'Versera ICE' to provide its subscribers not only with video mail capability, but also with advanced messaging capabilities such as voice mail, 'Versera Missed Call Notification' and 'Versera My Services', an Internet portal application that allows subscribers to have full control of their messaging features online.

MTN's six African operations -  South Africa , Uganda , Cameroon , Nigeria , Swaziland and Rwanda - have seen strong subscriber-base growth over the past year, and increasingly sophisticated usage of the MTN service as a business and personal communications aid. Looking to continue this trend, MTN has performed extensive customer research, which shows that the implementation of video mail - combining visuals, graphics and voice in a true real- time format - will allow MTN wireless customers to express their individuality in a way that's unparalleled in other mobile applications, while increasing loyalty to the MTN brand.
