Openwave in O2 trial Print E-mail
Thursday, 04 May 2006

O2 has announced an initiative to develop and trial a new generation of highly personalised, rich mobile messaging experiences in conjunction with Openwave Systems. During the initial phase of the collaboration, O2 and Openwave will develop a prototype messaging user experience that builds upon mobile Instant Messaging (IM), SMS and MMS with user presence information to deliver a seamless, intuitive service that makes mobile messaging richer, more effective and easier to use. This prototype will enable O2 to lay the foundations for future, next-generation mobile messaging services. Openwave will be responsible for providing both back end messaging infrastructure and handset software components to enable the prototype and will host the trial solution. On the handset Openwave will deploy its Mobile Integrated Dynamic Application System (MIDAS) technology, an application environment for mobile phones that uses well known web development standards. MIDAS enables operators to develop and deliver new mobile services on a vastly reduced timescale, with customised user interfaces that can be updated over the air. MIDAS will deliver a simple, customised handset interface for myriad messaging types that will be integrated with Openwave’s IP-based Adaptive Messaging solution to enable complete integration and compatibility with O2’s existing SMS, MMS and Email infrastructure, and future compatibility with potential IMS infrastructure investments.
