25 September, 2004: Kapsch CarrierCom AG has selected Nortel Networks to supply a GSM-R trial network for Czech Railways. The network will provide communications for trains crossing the border between
Germany
and the
Czech
Republic
. It will also position Czech Railways to make more efficient use of resources to increase train speeds, reduce delays, enhance passenger safety and operate more trains simultaneously.
Nortel will provide GSM-R equipment for International Corridor IV to provide network coverage from the German/Czech border to Kolin, including
Prague
. GSM-R network coverage for this railway corridor is another important step in creating a uniform cross-border digital train radio system in
Europe
.
The Czech Railway network will comply with rail industry-specific EIRENE standards and provide uniform transmission of voice and data for operation of the train line. This will include communications between train conductors, on-board crew, train dispatchers, station personnel and other operations groups, such as shunting (process of attaching and separating rail cars). The network will also manage operational, maintenance, motor vehicle and marshalling yard radio communications.
Kapsch CarrierCom is contracted by Czech Railways to supply, install and commission the GSM-R system. Nortel has been selected by Kapsch as the sole infrastructure equipment provider. Deployment will begin in the fourth quarter of 2004 and is expected to be completed by the middle of 2005.
