DT and Intel invest in web phone company.
T-Online Venture Fund - the investment arm of German incumbent Deutsche Telekom - has joined the US$20mn Series C investment round in web voice over IP phone (VoIP) company JAJAH. The move follows the announcement earlier this month of a strategic investment in JAJAH by Intel Capital, the investment arm of Intel Corporation and, according to the VoIP company, signals an important change in the global communication landscape as it is the first time in history that a major carrier has embraced a VoIP company. "This is a big moment in telephony history," avers JAJAH co-founder Roman Scharf. "The implications for both carriers and consumers are enormous. JAJAH is about bringing low-cost and innovative solutions to the global marketplace. This will be a big win for consumers everywhere." "Our vision is to build the next generation global communication company. Having both Intel and Deutsche Telekom as investment partners will help make this vision a reality," adds JAJAH co-founder Daniel Mattes. Deutsche Telekom is apparently already in the process of embedding JAJAH into its own web properties and expects to offer consumer and business solutions based on JAJAH technology in the future. JAJAH customers get low cost or free calls by accessing the JAJAH website and entering their telephone numbers and their required correspondents’ numbers. JAHJAH then calls and connects both sets of parties over the Internet. John Williamson |
