Singapore appoints single number portability provider Print E-mail

The Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) has appointed Syniverse as the country's only number portability centralised database administrator. Syniverse will be awarded the licence to provide number portability solutions to Singapore's telecommunications operators, and will establish number portability service agreements with all of Singapore's telecom providers. The license will allow Syniverse, as an operator-neutral third party, to administer the database and provide number portability services to operators for seven years. The number portability database will facilitate the seamless transfer of telephone numbers when subscribers wish to keep their numbers but change service providers between two mobile operators. Also included in the licence is the right to provide number portability services to fixed-line operators and others, such as VoIP and wireless broadband operators, should the need arise. Singapore Computer Systems (SCS), a Singapore-based information and communications technology service provider, will provide local support for Syniverse's number portability solution. Singapore's new centralised database is expected to be in place by the second quarter of 2008, at which time service providers will be expected to meet the IDA's new number portability regulations. According to the IDA, Singapore's operators serve more than six million subscribers.
