By the commonly agreed standards of decency, democracy and international law, Algeria ought to be regarded as a pariah state. Are the likes of France Telecom and Emirates Telecom guilty of taking the phrase 'capitalism: red in tooth and claw' a bit too seriously?

European and Middle East telcos are queueing up to buy up to 51% of Algérie Télécom. FT and Etisalat are confirmed runners while MTC and Orascom are also rumoured to be in the frame. Algeria is run by a brutal dictatorship that plays 'pick 'n' mix' with democracy. I'll leave it to you to make the connection.
