02 November, 2004: Gateway Communications has concluded an interconnection agreement with Zanzibar Telecom (Zantel), the second national operator (SNO) and licensed GSM carrier in Tanzania. The new service will allow Zantel to benefit from increased settlement revenue on international telephone calls and assist Zantel in winning subscribers through the provision of high-quality international calling services. Gateway, a provider of international voice and data services throughout Africa, is already active in East Africa where they maintain a presence in Uganda, Kenya and Somalia. The new agreement will allow Gateway to extend the network to Tanzania by establishing a direct satellite link between Zantel's domestic network and Gateway's hubbing centre in the United Kingdom.

Zantel wanted to benefit from increased settlement revenue on international telephone calls and increase it's market share of the international telephony traffic terminated into East Africa. Through Gateway, Zantel will gain access to the world's largest telecommunications operators including include PTT's, GSM operators, long distance carriers and non-traditional sources of traffic such as the international calling-card market.

The new service will also position Zantel to acquire new subscribers through the delivery of cost effective outbound calls from Tanzania to key international destinations, such as European and African mobile networks, through Gateway's targeted Route Management Services.
