Half a billion mobiles in Q3 says Wireless Intelligence. But men from Ministry say they’re there already…

China, the largest cell phone market in the world, is on track to pass the 500mn connection mark in Q3 2007. So says a recent analysis of that market by Wireless Intelligence (WI) - the joint venture between Ovum and the GSM Association.

According to WI, with quarterly growth averaging around 4%, China is adding around 19mn cellular connections each quarter, with market penetration at 35% in Q2 2007. China Mobile claims nearly 70% of the market with a strong grip of the prepay market (79%), which accounts for 66% of the total market. The leading operator is growing at an average rate of 5% quarter-on-quarter and 20% year-on-year.  In 2007, China Mobile is expected to continue on the same growth trend, says the organisation’s senior analyst Joss Gillet.

China Mobile’s own data indicates a gravity-defying net addition of nearly 5.6mn subscribers in July. Meanwhile, agency reports have China ’s Ministry of Information Industry releasing new figures that show the country’s mobile phone user population at over 501.6mn at the end of June, rising to over 508.5mn at the end of last month.
