New research for industry body shows continued demand for IPTV within the context of overall DSL and broadband growth.
New figures from The DSL Forum, based on a study carried out by researchers Point Topic, show that there are now 8mn customers for IPTV services worldwide. Some 5mn of these are in Europe, according to the numbers announced yesterday at the Broadband World Forum in Berlin. Overall IPTV growth reached 179% in the 12 months to the end of June 2007, with that figure rising to 231% in Europe. According to John Bosnell, Senior Analyst with Point Topic, “top markets like France [2,550,000 customers] and Hong Kong [938,000 customers] show that IPTV can be deployed rapidly to large numbers of subscribers, if the market conditions are right. On the demand side, competitive and clear bundle pricing and content deals will help to attract customers to IPTV services, while on the supply side, making IPTV easier to install and develop will help to deliver IPTV services to a wider subscriber base.” Addressing the issue at the crux of IPTV’s success, Bosnell adds that “developing and agreeing standards will help to simplify the delivery process and drive higher take-up in other markets too.” The research also revealed that 200mn of the world’s 313m broadband subscribers are connected via DSL, giving the technology a broadband market share of around 66%. “The figures illustrate that DSL remains a vital tool in the successful delivery of bandwidth-hungry bundled services”, commented Robin Mersh, the COO of the DSL Forum.
