EU publishes up-to-date broadband stats and implies that, once again, there will be trouble ahead for recidivists.

In Denmark, there is 37.2% penetration; in Bulgaria, that figure is 5.7%. Statistics made public on Monday suggest that 72.5% of the EU-27’s 90mn broadband lines are DSL-based but sees DSL growth slowing as a percentage of the total  as cable, wireless and fibre show growth.

The EU is worried, however, about two-speed broadband development in the Union. As a significant indicator of ICT development and broader economic performance, one can empathise with its dismay on this matter.

"Broadband growth remains strong with the top EU countries now world leaders in broadband penetration", said EU Telecoms Commissioner Viviane Reding. "However, it is unacceptable that the gap between the strongest and weakest performers in Europe is growing. Europe must act now to get its broadband house in order. I will make specific proposals on this as part of our package of reforms for the EU Telecom Rules on 13 November."

The redoubtable Reding reminds us that the EU’s next telecom review is less than a month away. For further analysis of that, click here (wait until it turns blue on Wednesday!).
