09 November, 2004: Open Plug has announced that it will provide its Embedded Linux Plug-in System (ELIPS) component-based cellular handset software framework to Commit, to support rapid customisation of 3G chipsets for the Chinese market. The agreement between the two organisations allows Commit to cost-effectively offer ELIPS to its customers, allowing them to work with a large number of application developers to provide a wide range of 3G applications. .
ELIPS is a small embedded engine that runs on the handset with negligible memory foot print and resource overhead. It sits above the handset's RTOS and allows adding and customising of handset applications and user interface quickly, drawing from the many Linux compatible applications available in the market. Handsets running ELIPS can also be upgraded in the field, to support ongoing differentiation and revenue growth. ELIPS' component-based technology allows selected software features to be assembled quickly reducing roll-out costs and time to market for new services.
