New figures show that IPTV subscriber base more than doubled in one year.
According to research carried out by analysts Point Topic for The Broadband Forum, the number of IPTV subscribers worldwide reached 15.4mn at the end of the first quarter of this year. The equivalent figure at end Q1’07 was 7.2mn. Europe leads the way with 8.45mn users, followed by Asia-Pacific (2.61mn), North America (2.25mn) and South and East Asia (2.08mn). The highest percentage growth over the period was recorded in North America, at 165%. Europe, by comparison, grew by 117%. “IPTV operators around the world have shown that systems are scalable and can handle rapid growth in subscriber numbers”, said Point Topic Senior Analyst John Bosnell. “However, developing and agreeing standards will help these operators deliver IPTV more simply and effectively over a variety of access technologies and help to drive higher up take in other markets.” The research also found that broadband user numbers have topped 370mn worldwide, with DSL technologies supplying 65% of those customers. More than 12.4mn IPTV users – 78% of the total – employ ADSL2plus access. Jim Chalmers |
