Kenyan operator to launch 3G services Print E-mail
Monday, 22 September 2008
Kenya’s third mobile operator, Econet Wireless Kenya (EWK), is to unveil its 3G services as part of its roll out later this year. The 3G technology will initially be available in Nairobi and surrounding regions. This follows the recent allocation of the 3G spectrum to the operator by the Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK). The 3G services include wide area wireless voice telephony, video calls and high speed broadband wireless data in a mobile environment. Subscribers will need to acquire 3G enabled handsets in order to get mobile broadband services, which include high speed internet access, email communication, access to calendars and other multimedia services. PC users will be able to access the service using either a broadband modem plugged into a computer to access the internet for a single user or a broadband wireless router for a group of users. The service enables robust and high speed broadband internet services whether mobile or in a fixed office environment. It also eliminates the perennial challenges of limited fixed network infrastructure and expensive internet access alternatives that currently exist in Kenya. This news follows EWK’s announcement last week that it is on track to launch into the Kenyan market before Christmas. It is also on schedule to make its first call by the end of this month.
