Nortel has won major contracts in Russia and Turkey. In Russia telecoms giant Comstar United TeleSystems, a major operator of integrated telecommunications services in Russia and the CIS, has implemented a VoIP network solution from Nortel to help accommodate the need for reliable, affordable long-distance VoIP across the entire Russian Federation. Comstar obtained its long-distance access area codes for Russia in July 2008 and has just begun commercial operations of long-distance voice services. Russia is the largest country in the world spanning more than an eighth of the Earth's land area. In a country of this size, affordable communications - especially long-distance communications - is vitally important. With its new Carrier VoIP network Comstar can provide affordable, long-distance VoIP across all regions of the Russian Federation including Moscow, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg, Samara, Rostov-na-Donu, Vladivostok and other regional centres.

In Turkey Turk Telekom has selected a Nortel IP Powered Business communications solution to create opportunities for new service revenue by providing carrier-grade voice and multimedia services to businesses and consumers throughout Turkey. The new solution, at the heart of which is the Nortel Communication Server 2000, enables Turk Telekom to deliver Centrex IP and SIP multimedia services to corporate customers and small to medium-sized businesses (SMBs) without having to invest in new infrastructure. The solution also includes services from Nortel's Global Services portfolio.
