18 January, 2005: The nominations for the 2005 GSM Awards have been announced by the GSM Association. Since their inception ten years ago, the Awards have become the Oscars of the mobile industry and are eagerly competed for each year.

 

Over 450 entries were received for the 2005 Awards, reflecting the prestige in which they are held. The winners will be announced on 15 February at the 3GSM World Congress in Cannes . Intel is the 2005 Platinum Sponsor and Nokia, Microsoft and Fortune magazine are on board as category sponsors. CNBC is the principal broadcast media partner.

A total of twelve awards will be presented in four categories: Applications, Content & Services, sponsored by Nokia; Handsets, Devices and Network Solutions; Marketing and Promotion, sponsored by Microsoft; and Mobile in the Community, sponsored by Vodafone. On the evening, a further Award winner will be announced - the GSM Association Chairman's Award. This is given at the discretion of the Chairman to recognise outstanding contribution to the advancement of GSM. In 2004, the Award went to President Zhang Li Gui of China Mobile Communications Corporation.
