A funny thing happened on the way to this article. Last time, Google Ads posted links to inflammatory fascist Christian propaganda on this website, without asking, and so we went into endtime territory. Should we turn the other cheek?
We’ll keep this short. I wrote a fairly rubbish article on this website yesterday about the way the web has become a fertile ground for conspiracy theorists. This began as a light-hearted piece but grew darker as I delved deeper --- not very deep, no more than two clicks from the surface --- into the mire of collective insanity about Roswell, Elvis, 9/11, Armageddon and the like. It’s here if you can be bothered but I don’t recommend it: a couple eye-opening facts, two good jokes, one decent pun, all cloaked in a few thousand words of dross.
Result: a pretty rubbish article. Sideways result: our website’s Google Ads, which yield enough money to buy a cup of coffee from Starbucks every three months or so, go a bit mental. Our Google Ads usually relate to switchboards or training courses or, on a good day, training courses for the use of switchboards. Good honest fun with a whiff of grease and swarfega. But after ‘Webbed Feat: all’s well that’s Roswell’? All hell breaks loose (to coin an ill-considered phrase). There are some ‘live’ Elvis performances advertised which is cool (bur children, don't be fooled, he's cooked). And there are the extreme bonkers Christian weblinks too. I find these deeply, morally offensive but the ads appear immediately. Click on the page and you’ll see the ads for yourself, but here’s a lengthy taster from ‘antichristidentity.com’, now proudly hosted by TelecomRedux: “My name is Mel Sanger, an international political researcher. We can no longer guarantee its availability.” I respect the right of halfwits to write this shit. Very stupid and nasty, the sort of vile vitriol that gives sustenance to those who would murder the heads of abortion clinics, etc. But why oh why is Google allowed to propagate it via our website without asking me or my colleagues. Would it conjure up something similar thanks to its clever all-knowing algorithms if I wrote about neo-Nazis or paedophiles or people who drink their own urine? Maybe it’s a storm in a tea cup (well, it’s a cup full of warm tan liquid) but we will go on and have some fun with this. I dunno whether the endtime Google ads will be back on this update until I post this story. And, by then, it may just be too late. But that would merely lead us to ‘the rapture’.
