| Carrier Ethernet – All-rounder in Transmission
“Carrier Ethernet solutions set a new trend in broadband services. Once separate networks for business and residential services are now merging, enhancing classical Ethernet with the latest technologies for packet-based access, aggregation and service provisioning. These true carrier-grade solutions from Siemens lay the foundation for a flexible and cost-effective next generation network, providing the opportunity for the carrier to participate in growing markets offering flexible and highly reliable Ethernet broadband services to residential and business customers. As an example, the introduction of new services requires higher bandwidth offerings to the subscribers. In particular video services but also gaming will drive the bandwidth demand, while Voice over IP can be put on top of the DSL service without extra cost for access. For MPEG‑2 encoded video streams, 4 Mbit/s are still necessary and 1.5 Mbit/s for MPEG‑4. Since two or more video streams are necessary to satisfy subscriber demand, several megabits of bandwidth have to be delivered to all subscribers. At the same time, Carrier Ethernet allows CAPEX and OPEX spending to be reduced significantly, especially with regard to the bandwidth and services offered thus providing the right response to carriers’ needs both today and in the future.”
