Thai operator Advanced Datanetwork Communications (ADC) has awarded Siemens the contract to provide, install, and maintain its nationwide Ethernet-based broadband network. Under the terms of the deal, Siemens will additionally supply and deliver its Surpass Home Entertainment solution, to turn television sets into home entertainment and communications centres. The solution enables ADC to offer to its customers high-speed Internet access together with a multitude of online services through traditional television. The contract initially covers 200,000 broadband lines. With this solution, ADC can also offer its customers TV reception over Internet and video on demand. These business opportunities are attractive in Thailand where TV penetration rate of almost 100% is significantly higher than the country’s PC penetration rate. In the next step, ADC plans to expand its service offerings to include online gaming and voice and video telephony. In addition to these applications, the Surpass Home Entertainment solution also allows operators and service providers to offer entertainment services such as digital TV recorder and communication services such as e-mail and SMS over TV.

"The end-to-end solutions provided strengthen ADC’s presence in the Thai broadband access market and make available to the Thai people very affordable high-speed Internet access with a wide range of innovative services", said Mrs. Aphivan Saipradist, managing director of ADC.

"This success in Thailand reinforces our strategy to offer competitive end-to-end solutions that enable operators to provide new services with immediate end-user benefits. In the case of ADC, the full range of broadband services can now be extended to TV viewers in addition to PC users, thereby intensely broadening ADC’s addressable market", said Lothar Pauly, head of the Siemens Com Group Board.
