ETNO to EU Dutch Presidency: carry Lisbon forward Print E-mail
Saturday, 10 July 2004

01 July, 2004: As The Netherlands assumes the EU's Presidency today, ETNO welcomes the Dutch government's approach to the information & communications technology (ICT) sector.

The Netherlands' telecom priorities include implementation of the new regulatory framework, promotion of e-content and safer use of the Internet, infrastructure innovation, e-security and analysis of the ICT sector in 2005 and beyond. Together, these form a challenging work programme.

Dutch officials say their government sees the next six months as a period of reflection to build on the EU's existing telecom policies to ensure their success. This re-think includes ways to exploit ICT in order to re-energise the Lisbon process, whose objectives are behind schedule.

"Capital investment in ICT in general – and broadband in particular – is a necessary ingredient to making the Lisbon recipe work: investment brings innovation, growth and strength to the EU's economy", said Michael Bartholomew, Director of the European Telecommunications Network Operators' Association.

Noting that Europe's telecom operators are doing their part to bring broadband quickly and efficiently to society, he said: "ETNO looks to the Dutch presidency to complement that effort with investment-friendly policy support!"
